Puerto de Información Científica (PIC)

PIC was founded in 2003 as a data center of excellence for scientific data processing, supporting scientific groups working in projects which require large computing resources for the processing and analysis of massive sets of distributed data. It is operated and maintained through a collaboration agreement between IFAE (Instituto de Física de Altas Energías) and CIEMAT supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the catalan Department of Economy and Knowledge.

Since its creation in 2003, PIC has been collaborating closely with the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) as the Spanish Tier-1 centre.

 

PIC resources

  • 35 Racks with a total capacity of 1500U
  • 550 kVA UPS and 2MWA diesel electric generator
  • 9 Petabytes of Disk storage
  • 53 Petabytes of Tape storage capacity (used 24 TB).
    24 drives, 3.5 GB/s aggregate read throughput.
  • 8000 CPU cores of compute capacity
  • Awitched Ethernet LAN with 10Gbps links (aggregated bandwidth ~1Tbps)
  • 2x20 Gbps WAN 



     

   

WLCG Tier-2 Centre at CIEMAT

CIEMAT operates and maintains since 2003 a second level regional data processing centre of the WLCG distributed computing infrastructure, a Tier-2 centre, for the CMS experiment at LHC.

A Tier-2 site has the main functionality of hosting the data analysis, supporting users and analysis groups, importing and storing the data and providing the hardware and software resources for an efficient analysis. It also has to provide resources for calibration tasks and for the production of simulated data. The agreement, following the Spanish share to CMS, is to provide resources equivalent to 5% of the total CMS needs for these centres.

  • 2500 CPU cores of compute capacity
  • 2 x 10 Gbps WAN connectivity
  • Swtiched Ethernet LAN connectivity with 10Gbps links (aggregated bandwidth ~1Tbps)
