CHEP 2016

03/10/2016: The 22nd International Conference on Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics, CHEP 2016, takes place in San Francisco, USA. The CHEP conferences address challenges in computing, networking and software for the world’s leading data-intensive science experiments that currently analyze hundreds of petabytes of data using worldwide computing resources. Members of our group participate in 10 contributions to CHEP.

New compute node added to the Tier-2

03/10/2016: The compute capacity of the Tier-2 centre has been expanded by adding a supermicro TwinBlade system with 10 blades hosting 2 servers each and each server mounting 2 Intel E5-2650-v4 processors with 12 cores, 96 GB RAM and 2x10GE network interfaces. With the recently installed 480 processing cores, the Tier-2 centre provides a total of 2250 cores to the CMS distributed computing infrastructure.

11/06/2016: The PIC computer equipment is submerged in tanks filled with mineral oil. This cooling system is on average 40% more efficient than those in other data centres around the world. Read the complete news here

Core network upgrade in the Tier-2

22/09/2016: The core-networking infrastructure of the Tier-2 centre has been upgraded. The central switch connecting the compute and storage infrastructure has been replaced by two redundant and load-balanced Brocade VDX6740 switches that provide 2x64 10 Gbps and 4x40 Gbps optical links. They conform a logical chassis that can grow in future according to our needs. This new core element will allow us to increase our external connectivity to 2x10 Gbps.

Storage capacity increase in the Tier-2

27/09/2016: The disk storage capacity of the Tier-2 centre has been increased by about 1 PB. Four supermicro SSG-6048R-E1CR36H disk servers have been acquired, each mounting 36x 3.5" hot-swap SAS3 8 TB helium disks, HW RAID SAS3 via LSI 3008 controller, 2x10Gbase-SR I/O optical links.
